We have bodies, minds and spirits.

We are multi dimensional. We have layers. We have stages. We have seasons.

Chinese Medicine has evolved over 4,000 years with this understanding. As a practitioner, I carry this understanding with me as well.

In Chinese Medicine we talk about all ill health as having a root (where the condition begins), and a branch (the symptoms the patient is experiencing).

For the root, I like to treat from multiple directions (acupuncture, herbs, bodywork, fitness, postural correction, nutrition, meditation) to resolve the condition and to strengthen the body to prevent the problem from happening again.

Chinese Medicine also provides us with so many options for treating the branch – managing pain, reducing discomfort, soothing the nervous system in cases of stress and insomnia, supporting the body in pregnancy, reducing inflammatory processes like allergies and auto-immune disorders and much more.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the insertion of stainless steel one-time-use only needles into the body at different points known as “acupoints”. The intent is stimulate the body’s own healing response.

Pain Management – I use a style of needling that is especially effective for pain and injury whether chronic or acute. This style is based in a thorough knowledge of human anatomy, how the body moves, and where areas of restriction tend to occur. It is considered the “sports medicine” of the all the acupuncture styles. For this reason, I have spent many years treating athletes, dancers, people with repetitive strain and traumatic injury.

Internal Medicine – For internal problems of any variety, I primarily use TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) style of acupuncture combined with other techniques I have learned over the years. I have found that internal issues are often well treated with a combination of acupuncture, herbs and improved nutrition.

Mental/Emotional – Acupuncture is very helpful for some of the more common mental/emotional issues we are facing today. Anxiety, depression, inability to focus to name a few. For mental/emotional concerns I will often combine acupuncture with mindfulness instruction, movement and simple meditation.

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing modalities known to humankind. It originated in China over four thousand years ago. It is one of the major modalities that constitutes Oriental Medicine. The basic underlying principle of acupuncture is an understanding of “chi”, or “life force”, an energy that courses through the entire person. When that life force is in balance health predominates. By placing acupuncture needles in various energy points in the body, a patients balance can be restored and symptoms healed through the body’s own restorative powers.

TCM is a style Acupuncture that is effective for many types of problems and conditions. There is really no illness that acupuncture cannot treat to some degree. Some of the more common illnesses are;

  • Pain – including muscles, bones, joints, nerve pain, and internal discomfort.
  • Mental/Emotional – Stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, PTSD.
  • Gastro/Intestinal – Weight gain/loss, digestion and elimination issues.
  • Gynecological – Fertility (male and female), menstrual problems, menopause and peri-menopause, pregnancy.
  • Immunity – Colds and flu, poor immunity, auto-immune conditions.
  • Ear and Eye problems
  • Skin
  • Hormonal Issues
  • Heart and circulation
  • Addiction – all types
  • Spiritual conflict

Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture and Microneedling

The purpose of cosmetic facial acupuncture is to create a younger and more vibrant appearance. The use of fine acupuncture needles stimulates collagen and elastin thereby lifting and toning the face and neck.

Some of the changes you may experience:

  • Improved muscle tone
  • Decreased puffiness
  • Firming of sagging skin
  • Elimination or reduction of fine lines
  • Evening of skin tone and improved lustre of complexion

As with all Chinese Medicine practices, we also look at and treat the patient’s general health and how it may be affecting the face. According to the theory of Chinese Medicine, there are meridians or “pathways” of energy that flow throughout the entire body. Therefore it is possible for Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture to address the energy of the entire body making it not merely a “cosmetic “ treatment. I have also found that becoming aware of and reducing habitual facial expressions can help with depression and anxiety – it goes both ways.

I also incorporate ancillary modalities such as Celluma LED light therapy (great for fine lines and acne), ultra sonic skin exfoliation, facial guasha and cupping (moves the lymph to decrease puffiness, stimulates collagen and elastin), derma rolling (excellent for scars).

Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture is not covered by insurance.

Because Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture takes time and repetition to really work, these treatments are also offered in a package format. The prices listed here are for individual treatments but I strongly recommend the package structure – you will see much better results. For packages, I am offering a 10% discount per visit off the listed price. The initial visit is full price unless a package is purchased at which point the 10% off applies to that visit as well. Packages are purchased in advance. A package consists of 10 treatments, ideally done over a 5 week period but a 10 week period also works. Scheduling is flexible and done online.

A Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture treatment consists of: Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture, Celluma LED light therapy, ultrasonic exfoliation, facial cupping, guasha, and application of Meizen skincare products.

Microneedling promotes the natural production of collagen and elastin fibers responsible for skin structure and elasticity. As we age, these fibers break down causing wrinkles and sagging.

The micro needle pen utilizes extremely fine, sterile needles that penetrate the skin and stimulate collagen and elastin. Microneedling can improve skin texture, shrink pore size, reduce wrinkles and acne scars as well as stretch marks. It can also dramatically enhance the effectiveness of skin care products.

Microneedling is not covered by insurance.

The patient will typically experience some soreness and redness after the treatment which generally clears up within the next day or two. Some peeling may follow a few days later.

Microneedling is best done in a series of 4 visits, 4-6 weeks apart.

80 minutes $220 per visit (includes aftercare products)

Herbal Therapy

Chinese herbs are grown for strength and are very effective for many problems without the side effects of pharmaceutical medication.

Today’s formulas come in pills, powders, as well as the more traditional dried plants which the patient brews into a tea. Chinese herbs are an effective alternative to costly pharmaceuticals that can leave the patient with unwanted side effects.

In cases of pain management and injury healing, I will often use topical formulas. These include linaments, plasters, lotions, gels etc. All of them have the end result of diminishing pain and accelerating healing and are easy to use.

Bodywork

I have found massage before and after acupuncture combined with stretching to be the most effective combination for pain management.

The more relaxed the patient is the more effective the acupuncture. For this reason, I will often begin a treatment with light massage before the acupuncture and follow up with more specific injury massage. After that, I will often use facilitated stretching if indicated and movement based alignment techniques to reeducate the muscle.

Postural Assessment

Poor posture is the culprit behind many pain patterns and can even serve as an underlying factor in acute injury cases.

I use postural assessment as a way to understand what patterns the body is holding. I then treat with acupuncture, bodywork and corrective exercises to help the patient find their way to pain free alignment.

Cupping

This technique entails using glass cups and a flame to create suction and then placing them on the body.

Cupping has been around for thousands of years in many countries. It beneficial for many types of pain as well as flu and cold/prevention and treatment. I also like to use cupping for treating areas of tightness in the body, such as anywhere on the back, neck and the side of the leg and hip.

Guasha

A scraping technique designed for pain relief and to increase range of motion.

Guasha has some similarities to cupping in that it improves blood flow and stretches fascia. Also great for flu and cold prevention/treatment. I use it for for joints and other places where there is restriction. It is excellent for increasing mobility in a joint.

Moxa

Moxa refers to the process of burning the herb mugwort on different acupoints on the body.

Moxa is great for immune system building, increasing circulation for pain relief, and flu and cold prevention/treatment. I will often use moxa instead of needles in cases where the patient is weak or suffering with an injury that is too sensitive to needle. I also give instruction in how to use it at home for self care.
